Personal Productivity with Productive Tension
What This Course Covers
Most productivity advice is built on a hidden assumption: that the problem is you. If you were more disciplined, had better systems, used the right app, woke up earlier — then you'd finally be productive. Productive Tension flips that completely.
The framework identifies five activation states — Apathy, Boredom, Power, Alertness, and Stress — based on the relationship between how much challenge you perceive and how much ability you feel you have. The insight isn't just naming them. It's that each state is productive for different things. Stress isn't bad — it's the wrong state for creative work but the right state for executing under deadline. Power isn't the goal — it's one state among five, and staying there permanently isn't realistic or even desirable.
This course teaches you to:
- Recognize which state you're in, in real time, without judgment
- Understand what each state is good for and what it's terrible for
- Shift states deliberately by adjusting perceived ability or perceived challenge — not by forcing yourself to "just do it"
- Match your tasks to your states instead of fighting to do the wrong work in the wrong state
- Build rhythms that work with your natural cycles instead of against them
What This Course Doesn't Cover
This isn't a time management course. We won't cover calendar systems, to-do app comparisons, or inbox zero. Those are tools — they only help once you understand which state you need to be in to use them effectively.
It's also not the full Productive Tension / ChangeWorks practitioner training. This is the personal productivity application — using the framework on yourself. If you want to use it with clients, that's the ChangeWorks-level training, which is a different commitment.
Who It's For
Knowledge workers and creatives who've noticed that some days everything flows and other days the same task feels impossible — and who suspect the difference isn't about willpower.
People with ADHD or neurodivergence who've been told their whole lives that they just need to try harder. The state-based approach may explain things that "executive function" framings don't.
Managers and leaders who want to understand why their team's performance varies and how to create conditions where people can work in their productive states more often.
Anyone who's tried GTD, time-blocking, pomodoro, bullet journaling, and everything else, and still feels like something fundamental is missing.
Who It's Not For
If you want a quick-fix system — "just do these 5 things every morning" — this isn't it. This is a framework shift. It takes practice and it changes how you think about work.
If you're currently in crisis — severe burnout, acute mental health challenges — this course can help eventually but it's not the starting point. Get support first, come back when you have bandwidth to learn a new framework.
If you haven't read the resource materials yet — go read the Productive Tension resource page and the personal productivity article. If those don't resonate and make you think "yes, this is the missing piece," the course probably won't land for you either.
The Two Available Tiers
Group Cohort — Six weekly sessions with a small group. You practice state awareness in real time, get feedback, and build the skill with others. The group is valuable because you'll see other people's states and patterns — it accelerates your own recognition. No sessions currently scheduled — register and if a cohort doesn't form within a month, you get a private session with me. Register earlier? That stacks — two months ahead gets two private sessions, and so on.
Individual — Eight private sessions. We work with your actual work, your actual states, your actual patterns. This is the most direct path to building the skill, because everything is calibrated to you specifically. Available on your schedule.
Self-guided materials are in development but not available yet. If you want to be notified when they're ready, the registration form includes a notification option — or start with a cohort or individual sessions and apply that investment toward the self-guided materials when they're available.
Is This Right For You Right Now?
You're in the right place if:
- You've read the Productive Tension materials and something clicked — maybe a "why didn't anyone tell me this before?" feeling
- You've tried productivity systems and they worked for a while and then stopped, and you want to understand why they stopped
- You're ready to pay attention to your internal states — this isn't abstract theory, it's a practice
- You're willing to let go of the idea that productivity is about discipline
If that's you, choose your tier. If you're not sure whether this or Beyond Reframing is a better starting point, the answer is probably this one — language patterns are powerful, but state management is more immediately useful for day-to-day work.
Every dollar invested here applies as credit toward the other tier. Start with a cohort and later want individual sessions? Your cohort fee comes off the individual price. This credit is good within this course offering — it doesn't transfer to other courses.
